Find out more about her and what makes her tick.

Hilde Garssen

You’ve had a long career in banking and telecommunications. What attracted you to ING?

After many years at the intersection of people, transformation and technology, I see ING as a natural next step. It’s an appealing company with strong roots in banking and a clear digital ambition, which really resonates with me. I’m particularly drawn to ING’s focus on innovation and its people-centric culture.

What qualities and experience do you bring to the role?

I bring energy and experience in helping organisations navigate transformation while keeping people at the core and the heart. Over the years, I’ve focused on building strong people centric cultures, developing leadership and driving modern people strategies in complex environments.

What’s your leadership style?

My leadership style is open, engaging and focused on connection. I believe in giving direction while creating space for people to take ownership and grow. At the same time, I value clarity and consistency, especially in times of change.

What are you most passionate about when it comes to the people agenda?

I’m passionate about unlocking people’s potential and helping organisations create an environment where everyone can thrive. That means investing in skills, fostering inclusive cultures and making sure people feel connected to the purpose and strategy of the organisation. When people feel engaged and supported, great things happen.

We operate in a complex, digital environment. How do you see companies balancing the best out of people and technology?

To me, technology is an enabler, a catalyst and a multiplier of human skills. But always with people at the center – both customers and colleagues. Real impact is unlocked when you combine human creativity, judgement and empathy with the power of technology and data. The key is to invest in both: build strong digital capabilities while continuing to develop leadership, adaptability and human connection.

What excites you and gets you out of bed each day?

What motivates me most is working with people – building something together, making progress and creating impact. That same energy carries over into my life outside of work, where I recharge by being outdoors, exploring new places or playing golf with friends. I also have a real passion for cooking – especially for a larger group of friends – bringing people together around the table for great conversations and genuine connection.
