A contract was signed in July under which ING Groenbank, ASN Groenprojectenfonds and Triodos Groenfonds extended a EUR 100 million green loan to Dutch energy company Eneco. The loan will be used to fund sustainable projects, the parties said in a joint statement. ING Groenbank acted as coordinating bank for the transaction, which will go down in the books as the biggest green loan to date.

Green loans are provided at a lower rate of interest than standard loans and are used specifically to finance sustainable projects. The lower interest rate is made possible under the Dutch government’s Regulation on Green Projects.

Annerie Vreugdenhil, head of ING Commercial Banking in the Netherlands, who signed the contract on behalf of ING Groenbank, said that by signing the agreement ING was showing its commitment to sustainability. "We are demonstrating our willingness to co-finance sustainable projects," she said.

According to Vreugdenhil this is the kind of project that ING likes to support. “Sustainable projects tend to be projects that benefit various businesses – from SMEs to large corporates. In that respect we are not only financing innovative projects but also promoting economic growth.“

“In the past year ING Green Bank has invested a great deal in sustainability. And we want to continue along this path!” said Vreudenhil in conclusion.
